Inaugural Solo Exhibition
Joseph Camp Thursday, July 28th, 2016 6:00pm - 10:00pm at Crosstown Arts, 430 N. Cleveland – Memphis, TN. 38104 All Activities are FREE and Open to the Public The Gravity Waves exhibition will consist of intimate gouache paintings. This body of work challenges the viewers’ Jungian sense of personal experience. Camp says, ”It’s about the inherent value of experience and the role of visual retention.” Many experiences in life provide a perspective on humanity. Ever wonder how one experience is captured in your memory and another simply passes by without a second thought. Overlooked forces are at work. Gravity is always present. However, Gravity Waves move and change. Art and gravity maintain an ongoing relationship. The process begins from paint dripping onto the surface during creation to viewers planting their feet in front of the final work. Years go by as the forces of gravity continue to effect a piece of art. For the viewer, the environment in which one views a work of art seems standard, yet the viewer's relational position to the work depends on the people and architecture surrounding the experience. The artist's relationship with gravity is continuous, as he says, ”A change in direction effects the critical function of the composition.” Any artist or viewer is drawn by the void of a surface, and as the work takes shape, each choice to make a mark or view a portion of the work is the result of an outside force. Joseph said rhetorically, “Is it time? Is it an electrical impulse of the mind? No matter the force, gravity is a constant influence.” The work will be on view at Crosstown Arts for One Night Only, July 28th, 2016. Gravity WavesPosted by Joseph Camp on Thursday, March 24, 2016 |
